2014 Show Time-(Show Help Form Link)

The Gem & Mineral Society needs your help to run the show. Most of the jobs can be done easily in a 3 or 4 hour shift. This would leave the rest of the day free for you to shop and enjoy the show. Most jobs do not involve heavy work.

Front desk: Several people are needed to help folks fill out door prize cards, pick up and keep tract of door prizes, pass out club & show information, and take membership applications. One or two people (depending on how busy) are needed to take admission fees. Opening time on Friday and Saturday are the busiest. Need some one to collect door prizes from the dealers, do the drawing and announce the winners every hour.

Salted Mine: Need help selling grab bags and running the salted mine.

The salted mine is popular with the children.

Geode Sales: Several people are needed to weigh, cut, sell, and clean the geodes during each time period.

Miscellaneous jobs:

Someone is needed to collect door prizes from the dealers and assist with the door prize drawings. Younger members can pull the winning tickets for the door prize.

Members can give the dealers a short break to go eat and walk around.

A few dealers need help to set up and take down.

Members are needed to display their private collections and examples of their lapidary work in the clubs display cases. The club also needs people to demonstrate their lapidary skills.

Set up and tear down: On Thursday morning we need help unloading the display cases, geode saw, and other show items from the club's white show     trailer to The Jamil Temple.  On Sunday after 5:00 PM, we need help taking these items down and loading them back into to the white trailer.

Save your stones, fossils, and minerals for the grab bags and salted mine. The children especially like sharks teeth, quartz crystals, mica pieces, and pyrite cubes. Bring these to the September and October meetings.

Mark the times you can help on the back of this sheet and bring it to the club meeting or mail to the club mailbox … PO Box 6333Columbia, …SC 29260

Southwest jewelry, silver rings, necklaces, one of a kind bracelets and lots of beads

In addition to all this, the Columbia Gem & Mineral Society will have geodes from Mexico that will be for sale at the entrance to the Jamil Temple. We will let you select and we will cut the geode for you. They may contain quartz, amethyst, smoky quartz, calcite. Geodes are geological rock formations, which occur in sedimentary and certain volcanic rocks. Geodes are essentially rock cavities where with internal crystal formations or concentric banding of materials form. Our geodes are from a volcanic origin.

We will also have a salted mine where for $1.00 a scoop, you can find crystals, fossils, rocks and minerals. You can “dig” for treasures that the Gem club provides. We can tell you where the minerals and treasures came from.

Another favorite is grab bags, which the club sells for $1.00, $5.00 and $10.00 that contain a wide variety of materials that we collect on our field trips and members provide for the Show. You can find almost anything (including small jewelry pieces) in our grab bags. Everyone finds these a treat.
