ORIGINS

Geologists and astronomers tell us that about four and one-half billion years ago, the universe was created.  Earth and its moon emerged and cooled.  Oceans formed and continents arose.  All things changed, sometimes slowly and sometimes from violent volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and great tsunamis.  Millions of years later, the ocean shoreline of what was later to be called the Atlantic Ocean had its white capped waves rushing ashore along the beaches of what is now the Sandhills of South Carolina.  Our Columbia Gem and Mineral Society may be a recent creation, but the core of its content goes back to the earliest times, since the gems, fossils and minerals we love trace the history of the earth with all its beauty.
